Hyperflite Canine Disc Features
  • Official disc of the Skyhoundz Hyperflite World Canine Disc Championship
  • State-of-the-art aerodynamic design and improved flight characteristics make K-10 models the best competition discs ever made
  • Gripping surfaces do not collect grit that can act like revolving sandpaper on a dog's teeth
  • Reinforced high-stress sections provide more strength and durability
  • Hyperflite K-10 model discs have no sharp edges or protruding injection-molding spurs
  • All Hyperflite K-10 discs weigh approximately 100 grams except the Jawz disc which weighs approximately 130 grams
Hyperflite K-10 Technical Synopsis

Experts who hold several world titles in canine and human disc sports tested the Hyperflite K-10 design extensively. The K-10 was found by these experts to offer a number of improvements over existing flying discs.

The K-10 disc has gripping areas on both the top and bottom surfaces of the disc, which are located in narrow concentric bands approximately one-inch wide. These “opposed” gripping surfaces are low profile and oriented so as to permit contact with all five fingers of a thrower’s hand when the disc is thrown. The opposed gripping surfaces are aligned so that while the K-10 is spinning, each protrusion of the gripping surface encounters the relative wind in the most aerodynamically clean way but when held by a thrower, using a standard back-hand grip, the gripping surface is presented to the thrower’s fingers in such a manner as to result in the best possible grip. The gripping surface itself is composed of a low-profile unidirectional, segmented and staggered pattern that minimizes the tendency of the gripping surface to collect abrasive materials that can cause wear on a canine’s teeth. Since the gripping surface is segmented and staggered, rather than continuous, any dirt or grit that might be present is easily cleaned from the gripping surface and there is no tendency for foreign matter to remain trapped as would be the case with a continuous grooved gripping surface as is employed in discs made by other manufacturers. The lower gripping surface has no aerodynamic effect on the K-10’s flight characteristics since it is not subjected to the flow of the relative wind as the disc flies. An aerodynamic benefit is gained from the segmented gripping surface on the top of the disc which, in addition to providing a gripping surface, also serves as miniature vortex generators, disrupting the flow of air over the disc in such a way as to improve the overall stability of the disc without any meaningful increase in drag.

The K-10 disc was designed to be the standard for canine disc competition. Consequently, improvements were incorporated into the design of the disc to enable it not only to fly farther than other canine discs, but also to be stronger in key areas subjected to wear or stress failure induced by canine teeth or jaw force. For example, the flight plate (top flat area of the disc) is thicker than the flight plate of other canine competition discs. The K-10 disc is also thicker in the area of the disc between the rim and the flight plate. This extra thickness helps the disc travel farther while maintaining its rotational energy enabling the disc to slow down and hover after achieving longer flights. The thicker area near the rim also lessens the likelihood of the rim breaking because of flexion in the rim area resulting from aggressive canine catches and powerful canine jaws. Our expert testers have determined that the K-10 disc travels approximately 10 to 20 percent farther than other canine discs when thrown under similar conditions. The testers also concurred that the opposed gripping surface contributes to the ultimate distance achieved in their throws. Testing with canines confirms the K-10’s strength in the key areas described hereinabove and inspection of the discs confirms that the gripping surface does not retain grit and other particulate matter that tend to have an abrasive effect on canine teeth.
